Year 2 Shadowing Students

Welcome to the UHNBC ER. We hope you enjoy your shadowing experience with us.

What to expect??

Please plan to show up 5-10min early so you are able to meet the physician working that shift at the start of the shift.

Once the shift starts you will "shadow" the physician you are working with to see how we work in the ED.

Please refer to the information on the Orientation page. The first two orientation documents: "General ED Overview" and "RAZ and Minor Treatment" will be helpful and include maps on where to find the RAZ area.

Infection Control Precautions

All learners and staff in the ED are required to wear a simple face mask, eye protection and gloves for patient encounters.

For the ED, we recommend that you change into scrubs that are available in the student/resident lounge. We do not recommend wearing casual clothing with a white coat. You will see a majority of staff additionally wearing a head/hair covering but this is your choice if you wish to wear one. Please plan to change into scrubs on arrival to the hospital and change back into your regular clothing prior to going home.

Regular hand hygiene is essential and you should wash your hands with hand sanitizer or soap and water prior to and after any patient encounter.

Shadow Student Role

The role of students participating in these experiences includes: observation of the work of an emergency physician and limited history and physical exam. There may be some exposure to procedures but these should always be done under the direct supervision of the emergency physician.
